AmeriCorps School Garden Coordinators

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:  At Montezuma School to Farm Project, each AmeriCorps member works with our staff members to maintain and expand the school gardens, track and implement planting schedules, plan classes that are integrated in the school day, and teach hands-on lessons to pre-k through middle school students. AmeriCorps members also supervise volunteers, coordinate with food service directors, post to our social media accounts, and participate in ongoing professional development. We find our AmeriCorps members to be key contributors to the success and creative development of our programs.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:  We look for candidates that are passionate, intelligent, creative, self-motivated team players, and who feel strongly about the importance of connecting kids to the source of their food for the betterment of themselves, their communities, and the larger world.

Additionally, we look for applicants with a background (preferred) or interest in experiential education, agriculture, local food systems, and health/nutrition.

This is a rural area - applicants must have a car, reliable cell phone service and a personal computer

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT:  August 2017 – August 2018

COMPENSATION:  This position receives a monthly living stipend and upon completion, is eligible for a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or additional cash stipend.

MISSION: Connecting our agricultural heritage with our growing future by engaging students at the crossroads of sustainable agriculture, resource conservation, health, and economics. 

ORGANIZATION: Montezuma School to Farm Project (MSTFP) is a program of the Mancos Conservation District in Southwestern Colorado. Since 2009, the MSTFP has focused on providing integrated, hands-on school garden classes in Montezuma County. We accomplish this through experiential education opportunities in outdoor garden classrooms, on farm field trips, through youth farmers markets, a youth farmer apprenticeship program, and summer farm camp. 

MSTFP serves three communities in our rural county: Dolores, Mancos, and Cortez. This region is home to a wealth of diverse cultures, ecosystems, and high altitude growing climates - from canyons to high deserts to the San Juan Mountain Range. 

Montezuma School to Farm Project operates out of 5 school garden sites, as well as the City of Cortez Recreation Center. We serve over 2,000 students, and produce over 4,000 lbs of food per year.

of Montezuma School to Farm Project

The Director of the Montezuma School to Farm Project (MSTFP) will have overall financial, strategic, and operational responsibility for 11 staff members. (S)/he will maintain and develop partnerships and fundraising opportunities, support program expansion, and ensure continued fulfillment of the organization’s mission. (S)/he reports to the Mancos Conservation District (MCD) Board of Directors, and facilitates the operations of unique program hubs, located in three separate towns. This person is expected to show exceptional skills in leadership, financial oversight, and communication.  The Director's leadership and management responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Write, submit, evaluate, and report on grants
  • Serve as the liaison between 3 local school districts and MSTFP, to advocate for annual funding, and county-wide continuity
  • Expand revenue-generating and fundraising activities
    • Communicate goals and expectations clearly and transparently to staff and board
    • Oversee event planning for annual fundraisers
  • Build and maintain collaborative partnerships at community, regional, and national levels with groups including; committees, coalitions, businesses, clubs, non-profits, government agencies, schools, boards, and more



  • Manage planning, evaluation, and tracking of all programs
  • Develop and implement an annual and 3-5 year strategic plan with MSTFP team and MCD Board
  • Cultivate cohesion in programming for 5 School Garden sites, 1 City of Cortez Recreation Center Garden Site, Summer Farm Camp Programs, and Farm Field Trip Event for 2500+ students annually

Supervise Staff and AmeriCorps Members

  • Hire, train, and evaluate the performance of all team members
  • Oversee New Programs and Systems Coordinator, Education Coordinator, 4 Garden Coordinators (1 @ FT, 2 @ .75 FT, 1 @ .5 FT), and 5 Direct Service AmeriCorps members
  • Collaborate with Senior Staff leadership team


Direct Media, Education, and Outreach Communications

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications - from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger partnerships and relationships as well as educating the public about MSTFP and MCD
  • Actively engage and energize MSTFP staff, volunteers, board members, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders
  • Become a local and national presence that publishes and communicates program results with an emphasis on the successes of the local program as a model for regional and national replication
  • Develop an advisory committee that includes liaisons from the MCD board




The Director works as a part of a dynamic team of educators, organizers, and leaders to develop strong partnerships with school districts, funders, staff, and community members. The position requires the ability and willingness to collaborate with multiple stakeholders and reach the organization’s mission through innovative programming.

The Director will be thoroughly committed to MSTFP’s mission and the ongoing operation of this program. This person must understand that the Director’s schedule will fluctuate to accommodate seasonal intricacies and stakeholder needs, with a typical work week averaging 30 hours. Candidates must be willing to live in Montezuma County and demonstrate the ability to become a community leader. Applicants should have proven financial, leadership, communication, organizational, and relationship management experience. (S)/he must be action-oriented, self-directed, idealistic, positive, mission-driven, charismatic, and adaptable, with an unwavering commitment to garden-based experiential education. Candidates are required to have dependable personal transportation, a laptop computer, and reliable cell phone access.

The ideal candidate will have many of the following skills, attributes and experience:

  • Degree in related field, or equivalent work experience, and a minimum of 2 years in managementExcellence in organizational management including the ability to coach/mentor staff, manage multiple sites across the county, develop effective and supportive teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a growing and dynamic budget
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • An entrepreneurial drive fueled by innovative approaches to non-profit/business planning
  • A track record of effectively leading and regionally scaling an organization
  • Past success working with a board of directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Exceptional interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills, with the ability to communicate passionately and persuasively
  • Computer savvy with the Microsoft and Google suites, Squarespace, and social media sites. Preferred experience developing/using donor databases, and using design-based programs
